The club was founded in 1904 and currently plays in the Bundesliga, the top tier of the German football league system. The club has won the German Football Association (DFB-Pokal) once, in 1988. Freiburg have a long-standing rivalry with fellow Baden-Württemberg club, Karlsruher SC.
