The club's greatest success was in the early 1980s, when they won the German championship in 1983 and were runners-up in 1984. They also won the German Cup in 1985. In 1985, they also made it to the UEFA Cup final, where they lost to Real Madrid.

Holstein Kiel FC is a German football club based in Kiel, Schleswig-Holstein, that currently competes in the 2. Bundesliga, the second tier of German football. The club was formed in 1900 and has since grown to become a competitive and well-supported side. The club has a long and illustrious history, having won the German championship in 1912. They have also won the Schleswig-Holstein-Liga three times and the Oberliga Nord twice. The club has had several spells in the top flight of German football, most recently from 2015 to 2020.
