Telstar Football Club (also known as Telstar or Telstar FC) is a Dutch professional football club based in Velsen in the province of North Holland. The club was founded in 1963 and currently competes in the Eerste Divisie, the second tier of Dutch football. The team's home ground is the 3,500 capacity Telstar Stadion, and their main rivals are fellow Velsen-based club SC VVV. The club was founded in 1963 as FC Velsen, and changed their name to Telstar in 1970, when the team moved to the new Telstar Stadion. The name was a reference to the satellite Telstar 1, which was launched two years earlier. The club initially competed in the Dutch amateur leagues until the late 1970s, when they were promoted to the Eerste Divisie. In the early 1980s, Telstar achieved consecutive promotions and entered the Eredivisie in 1983. The club has since played in the top two tiers of Dutch football, but have been relegated from the Eredivisie three times in 1989, 1993 and 1997. Telstar gained notoriety in the Netherlands in the early 2000s for their financial problems, as the FC Emmen is a professional football club based in Emmen, Netherlands. The club was founded in 1925 and currently competes in the Eredivisie, the top tier of Dutch football. FC Emmen has a history of fluctuating between the first and second divisions, but achieved promotion to the Eredivisie for the first time in their history in 2018. Despite being considered as one of the smaller clubs in the league, FC Emmen has managed to establish itself as a competitive team, often punching above their weight and challenging more established clubs.
