The club's greatest success was in the early 1980s, when they won the German championship in 1983 and were runners-up in 1984. They also won the German Cup in 1985. In 1985, they also made it to the UEFA Cup final, where they lost to Real Madrid. VfL Bochum plays their home games at the vonovia Ruhrstadion, which has a capacity of over 32,000.
