Founded in 1883 as Singers F.C., the club adopted its current name in 1898 and is one of only five professional clubs to have ever won the FA Cup, in 1987. They also reached two consecutive FA Cup finals, losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the 1981 final and defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3–2 in the 1987 final.
