Newcastle United FC is an English professional football club based in Newcastle upon Tyne, Tyne and Wear. The club was founded in 1892 and currently plays in the Premier League, the first tier of English football. Newcastle United have a long and successful history, having won the FA Cup six times, the Football League Championship four times, the UEFA Intertoto Cup once, and the UEFA Inter-Cities Fairs Cup once. The club have also been runners-up in the FA Cup and Football League Championship on six occasions each. Newcastle United have a fierce rivalry with neighbouring Sunderland, with whom they contest the Tyne–Wear derby, and are renowned for their passionate fan base and vocal home support.
